Samuel Rojas
Mexico City, 1959. He has lived and exhibited in Oaxaca since 1997. Trained in Graphic Design, he brings his experience to bear on the composition of typographic spaces, at the magazine Vuelta of the Nobel laureate in Literature Octavio Paz and in the Publications Department of the National Council for Culture and the Arts (CONACULTA).
In the pictorial realm he has the good fortune of drawing on the experience of the masters Miguel Suazo and Nacho Alfonso Flores at the Gilberto Aceves Navarro visual arts workshop of SOSICULTUR, in Mexico City, where he is introduced to the learning of drawing, of non-form and yes to the impression of gesture; while at the same time practicing the effects of printmaking through monotype.
Gesture and its visual impression pushed Rojas to become an abstract painter. One who experiences the chroma exerted by the force of light upon color, applying it layer by layer in constant glazes, embracing matter. Positing a pure state that traverses the empty and filled it, space – matter, feeling the stain and the gesture of the stroke. He takes up the reflection of opposites that attract, as a natural consequence, and the image enters into the constant of the “game of the communicating mirror”.
His time in Oaxaca and the experience previously acquired at the School of Handicrafts of Xocongo in the technique of making stone paper or amate paper, learned from Jerónimo Aguilar, an artisan from the community of San Pablito Pahuatlán in Puebla, allowed him to gain the experience to work in the Production Directorate of the Taller Arte Papel Oaxaca of the Institute of Graphic Arts of Oaxaca (IAGO), of Master Francisco Toledo.
Among his distinctions: The Pacific Biennial “Paúl Gauguin” 1999 awarded him an Honorable Mention in the painting category. He has been a fellow of the State Fund for Culture and the Arts of Oaxaca (FOESCA) and a member of the National System of Creators with a track record at CONACULTA.
His work has been exhibited both collectively and individually in museums, galleries, and private collections in Mexico as well as abroad. Notable is his participation in exhibitions at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, in the Sala Adamo Boari in Mexico City, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Ateneo de Yucatán (MACAY), Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico. The ROCCA Paolina Exhibition Center, Università per Stranieri, Perugia, Italy. The Museo del Chamizal, Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico. Casa Redonda, Chihuahua Museum of Contemporary Art.
