Renata Alarcón
The discovery of the arts begins in an empirical way in Renata's life, in the workshops of her great-grandfather who made oil lamps and decorative ornaments in metal, brass, and silver. It is there where the artist, over the years and through explorations, discovers how to break materials down into their original state in order to appropriate them and give them a new meaning in a different context.
Motivated by this new narrative, Renata Alarcón studies an educational program at the Academia de San Carlos, where she discovers different techniques and ideas for the artistic intervention of objects. More recently, her practice with metals has been driven by courses and workshops at the School of Crafts in Mexico City, specializing in jewelry; an experience that facilitated her introduction to the knowledge of metals. Drawing on this new learning of the elements and the artistic techniques she acquired, she managed to interact in a constructive way within the artistic framework.
As an extension of her practice, she has collaborated with various artists on commercial and cultural projects, turning to literature as a means of expression. Her most recent publications have been for GLISE magazine in two consecutive editions, as well as collaborations and curatorial texts for the artist Prince Láuder and profiles of that same artist.
Currently, the character of her work aspires to portray basic forms found in nature and geometry, altering their ordinary shapes through explorations with various materials. The narrative of the resulting figure questions human thinking about the distortion it has attributed to each object in nature. Under this premise, the works were selected for the group exhibition MAROMA, in Mexico City, 2020; and also for the exhibition JUEGOS held by the visual artist Isauro Huizar in collaboration with Agencia de arte, Mexico City, 2020.
