Artist
Max Sanz
Max Sanz was born on April 24, 1992, in a community in the Sierra Norte of the State of Oaxaca, Mexico; from a very young age he showed a fondness for what would become his passion, the visual arts.
At the age of 12 he entered the “Rufino Tamayo” Workshop in the city of Oaxaca, thanks to the firm support of its then director, Maestro Juan Alcázar. It was there that he met Maestro Marco Palma, who introduced him to sculpture, and later it was Maestro Barry Head who taught him painting. Throughout his professional training he has been fortunate to study under various teachers, but three had the greatest impact on him: Maestro Barry Head, Maestra Marie José Lavín and Maestro Francisco Castro Leñero.
Alongside this learning, privately with his teachers, he took various workshops at the Centro de las Artes de San Agustín Etla, such as: a poster design workshop taught by Maestro Leonel Sagahon, a drypoint workshop taught by Maestro Fernando Sandoval, a critical production workshop taught by Maestro Francisco Castro Leñero, and a small- and medium-format sculpture workshop taught by Maestra María José Lavín Moroto; he studied for the Baccalaureate in Arts and Humanities at the CEDART “Miguel Cabrera and later studied for the Bachelor's degree in Visual Arts at the Universitario Bauhaus in the city of Puebla, from which he graduated.
He has held solo exhibitions since 2010, and they are: “Entre Apolo y Dionisio” at the Mupal, “Rojo Circo” at the Galería Monte Albán of the Casa de la Cultura Oaxaqueña, “Sueños y mentir del circo” at the H. Congreso de la Unión in Mexico City, “Circo Urbano” at the Galería Plaza de las Estrellas in Mexico City, “Milagros de circo” at the Pino Suarez metro station in Mexico City, “Presencias” at the H. Ayuntamiento of Huixquilucan, State of Mexico, “Códigos y signos” at Oaxaca Taller espacio alternativo, “El olor a color no se me quita de los ojos” at Torre Mayor in the Federal District, “Los santos” at the CANACO Oaxaca, “Mezcalomaquia” at the H. Congreso del Estado de Oaxaca, “Las puertas de Marruecos” on the mezzanine of the Asamblea Legislativa del Distrito Federal, “Cartas a Don Porfirio” at the Casa de la Cultura Jurídica of the Suprema Corte de Justicia de la Nación-Oaxaca, “El último acto” at the Galería Carlos & Albert in Oaxaca, “Sobreviviendo a Max Sanz” at the Museo de la Ciudad de Veracruz, “Textiles” at the Galería El cuadro in the city of Querétaro, “La flota de la armada invencible” in the Rufino Tamayo hall of the Casa de la Cultura Oaxaqueña.
He has also held international solo exhibitions, which are: “Burgueses rojos” at the gallery “The Hangar Gallery” in Miami, Florida, USA, “La Nao de China” organized and managed by the Consulate General of Mexico in Guangzhou, presented on tour during 2014 and 2015 at: the Guangzhou Museum of Art-China, the Haicang Cultural Center in the city of Xiamen-China, the C1 Gallery Redtory-Guangzhou-China, the Bandao Cultural Center of the city of Sanya-China, “Mezcalomaquia el último trago” at the Casa Mexic Cultural Center in Barcelona, Spain, “Tierra Roja” at the Maisson de M.A.I. Cultural Center in Paris-France, “El mar de los enamorados at the Casa Mexic Cultural Center in Barcelona, Spain.
Because of its duration, “La Nao de China” organized and managed by the Consulate General of Mexico in Guangzhou is one of Max Sanz's most important exhibitions, as it drew more than 31,000 visitors. Regarding this exhibition, the Consul General of Mexico, David Nájera, wrote in the spring of 2014: “…When Max Sanz thought about this journey, he considered what merchandise he would take, what products he would show to the Asian eyes on the other shore of the Pacific. The collection of fantastical animals in full color is the parade of sensations that populate Max's waking dreams, which he now, generously, shares with us. Coming from a land abundant in creators, Oaxaca, Sanz does not hide the influence of other artists and other generations, and yet, in his young career, he is already building a school of his own. The vitality of his color palette and his use of mixed media and new technologies suggest that his work will grow even further in the diversity of its resources from a strong seed, that of his sensibility and cultural complexity. Drawing on his aesthetic heritage and his solid academic training, Sanz disembarks in China with a nao full of suggestions and invitations; traveling on his ship are the cultural products of his imagination and of the gaze on the horizon of a traveler from other centuries who discovers, who charts routes, and who seduces and entertains the viewers. Welcome aboard the “nao de China”…”
He was an assistant to the sculptor Marco Palma, a printer's assistant in the workshop of Maestro Fernando Sandoval, a production and set-design assistant in the staging of the opera La Traviata at the Teatro Macedonio Alcalá in the city of Oaxaca, and a printer for Maestro Francisco Monterrosa.
The Ministry of Cultures and Arts of Oaxaca invited him to teach painting workshops as part of the Rodolfo Morales festival, in the community of San Martin Tilcajete, and as part of the festival Mayo una fiesta para todos, at the girls' home, respectively. He taught a painting course for children on gender abuse and violence in collaboration with the Casa de la Cultura Jurídica, the State Attorney General's Office, the COBAO and the Reyes Mantecón agency.
