David Guzmán

A self-taught artist, a master of his craft, an attentive listener to the whims of matter, a shaper of organic forms, an obsessive seeker of perfection, a meticulous builder of unrealities. All these statements could describe, more or less precisely, the sculptor we are about to discuss.

David Guzmán claims to have harbored a deep curiosity about the way matter—whether stone, metal or other materials—took on certain forms and transformed itself.

One thing he has clearly identified is that his sculptural work springs from NECESSITY and from STUBBORNNESS, from that insatiable hunger for the new; this is why he lets the material climb the walls, hang from thin cables, embrace stone elements in surprising ways, and take on capricious forms that seem contrary to its nature. His sculptures project a vitality that results from the meticulousness of their making.
