Alfredo Cota

A visual artist devoted mainly to sculpture. Through figurative representation, Alfredo Cota creates images of different animal species by means of a technical treatment of an expressionist bent.

Cota created for himself a language that explains him as an individual, while remaining a meaningful representation for the viewer. In his process there is a withdrawal, a distance from the world in order to observe himself and learn from himself, one of constant deconstruction and reconstruction.

A large part of his creative work focuses on the technique of modeling with plasticine, whose subsequent casting is carried out in rigid materials, particularly resin and metal. These images are the artist’s reflection on inherent animal behavior and instinct. In each piece, the artist seeks to capture an intimate experience that serves as a reminder of the transitoriness of his own life. Within it, two recurring themes are the processes of time and migration, inevitable actions that occur as one constantly changes physical and mental territory, driven by a constant search for enrichment through new experiences and learning.

Over the course of his artistic career, he has taken part in numerous solo and 
group exhibitions in various spaces across Mexico, such as the Museo Tamayo and Museo JUMEX in Mexico City. For 7 consecutive years he has collaborated in the México Vivo auction. In 2016, he was chosen to create the sculpture commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City. That same year, he was featured as guest artist of Moshi Art, also in Mexico City, with his solo exhibition “El Arca y el Zorro”. He has held exhibitions in various galleries and viewing platforms such as Gallery Weekend and Corredor Cultural Roma Condesa. In 2019, he participated in the Art Vancouver International Art Fair. His traveling solo exhibition “Animal, Elemento y Materia” was presented in early 2020 at the Museo de Arte de Ciudad Juárez, in May 2021 at the Museo de Arte Nogales in Sonora and, at the end of that same year, at the Museo Casa Chihuahua Centro Patrimonio Cultural. His most recent exhibition “Rituales y El Artista”, in a joint show with Mennonite artist Verónica Enns, opened at the Museo y Centro Cultural Menonita in August 2022 and was later exhibited in December of the same year at Casa Redonda Museo Chihuahuense de Arte Contemporáneo.
